Our History

Leveling the Playing Field was founded in 2013 in response to the growing inequity between those that can afford to play sports and those that cannot, and the prominent role the cost of sporting goods was playing in that gap.

After working in youth sports, college athletics and professional football, our founder, Max Levitt, realized the volume of equipment that goes to waste from elementary school aged kids all the way up to our professional sports franchises.  In response, he decided to develop essentially a food bank for sports equipment.

Leveling the Playing Field: A Note From Our Founder

Like most kids growing up in an affluent suburban community I was fortunate to be given every opportunity to participate in after-school sports. From competing in hockey and basketball throughout my entire childhood to trying golf for a summer, I was put in the advantageous position to reap the emotional and physical benefits of youth sports. Like many adults today who grew up in a similar environment, I cannot imagine what my childhood would have been like without it.

In too many under-resourced communities both in our inner cities and in rural areas, the opportunity to participate in sports has become increasingly inaccessible due to the expense of participating. In fact, low-income families are more than three times less likely to enroll their kids in youth sports due to the high cost of participation.

As both an equipment manager with Syracuse University’s football program as well as working with county recreation programs, I was appalled with the waste of sporting equipment I saw at the end of each season. The regularity in which people were throwing away unused or still perfectly good gear was absolutely shocking. It was that experience that ultimately led me to create what was essentially a “food bank for sporting equipment” through which we could funnel used gear to children who desperately needed it.

With the support of local youth sports families, we have been able to provide millions of dollars worth of equipment to schools, youth organizations, after-school programs and youth sports leagues to make sure that during and after school sports are accessible to students that were increasingly being left on the sidelines. We are excited to continue harnessing the collective power of our growing network of supporters to ensure that one day every child has the chance to participate in youth sports.

Remember playing tag, soccer, basketball, or kickb Remember playing tag, soccer, basketball, or kickball with new friends at summer camp? Play is a staple of summer, but for many kids there is a financial barrier keeping them on the sidelines.

LPF helps remove this barrier by providing free sports equipment to programs like @camp_jamison

Across three years, Camp Jamison staff picked up 361 pieces of sports equipment from LPF including tennis balls and rackets, cones, skateboards, and basketball gear. The basketball gear from LPF was a game changer for campers who don’t play basketball regularly, and reinforced what Camp Jamison is all about: building skills, relationships, and confidence to navigate life with a purpose.

Through LPF's Summer of Play campaign, you can help us create more cherished sports memories for kids across the country. For every $100 donated, we can equip 20 kids to enjoy all that sports have to offer this summer.

Together, we can provide free gear and a summer of PLAY for 50,000 kids. Check out our story and bio for more info!

Teaming with programs like @waves4change.official keeps kids active outside of school, and helps partners maximize their budget for other needs, such as pool time

In one of LPF’s largest distributions ever, Waves4Change received over 30 boxes of brand new boys and girls' swimsuits

Since 2025, LPF has distributed $77,000 worth of swimming gear to Waves4Change! With these donations, kids can focus on what Waves4Change calls "the superhero magic of swimming," without worrying about the costs of proper equipment
